There's a lot of hubbub around the "buy local" mantra these days, but there may be more in it for you that you realize, especially when it comes to honey.
By buying locally-produced honey, your body gets small doses of the same pollen that can trigger your allergies. In the same fashion that a vaccine works, by giving your body the honey, allergies may be dramatically reduced! So the closer you live to the beekeeper, the better off you are!

The 3 Musketeers bar was originally (1932) three pieces of candy in one package -- flavored vanilla, chocolate and strawberry. Soon after, they reduced it to one chocolate bar but kept the original name.
In the United Kingdom and Australia, the 3 Musketeers is called a Milky Way, and the American Milky Way is called a Mars Bar. The American Milky Way is also a Mars Bar in Canada. Recently, the American Mars bar was renamed "Snickers Almond" to simplify chocolate-eating for world-travelers.

The incredible edible egg...
In Japan, the average number of eggs eaten/person/year is 347. The US makes the list with 238 per person per year.
The elephant bird, extinct within the last 1,000 years, laid an egg that was seven times larger than an ostrich egg. These eggs weighed about 12kg apiece, were 30 cm long and could hold up to 8.5L of liquid or the equivalent of 12,000 hummingbird eggs -- sure makes one hell of an omelet...

The most expensive coffee on earth ($300-$600 a pound), called kopi luwak, is made from beans passed through the digestive system of a civet, a cat-like creature found on the island of Sumatra in Indonesia.
The cat feasts on ripe coffee cherries then passes them through its system, after which they are gathered and roasted like other coffee beans. The coffee is said to be like no other, and has a rich flavor with hints of caramel and chocolate.

Pimento, the red sliver in green olives, is a large, red, heart-shaped pepper. They are added to olives as part of the pickling process to make olives less bitter.
Since green olives are picked while unripe, they are more dense and more likely to be bitter than black olives.

What makes hot peppers hot?
The answer is a chemical compound called Capsaicin (see also a January fact), which is found in the inside wall of the pepper and in its white lining. Capsaicin is odorless and tasteless, except for the hot, tangy sensation it yields. The true flavor of a pepper comes from its outer walls.

The first lollipop was invented just prior to the Civil War when someone thought it would be a good idea to stick some candy on then end of pencils for children to nibble on.
The world's largest lollipop was made by Jolly Rancher in 2002 and weighed in at over two tons and a billion calories. Meaning that it would take a 150 lb person a straight year of running a 9 minute mile to burn off all the fat-free calories.
But no one's allowed to lick it. Suckers.
